The new 7" by Sydney outfit theredsunband is the latest offering from Australia’s Passport label.
Bursting onto the music scene with a fuzzed-out guitar sound, the simplicity of a three-piece format and the haunting vocals of Sarah Kelly, theredsunband have charmed audiences with a sound they term “distorto-dream-pop”.
The Eagle is a punchy, dark rock song, with tight harmonies, yet still retaining a dreamy, atmospheric feel. At just over two minutes, it is perfectly succinct. The B-side Like An Arrow is smart and melodic, with the haziness of Mazzy Star and the pop sensibility of The Shins.
Sisters Sarah & Lizzie Kelly form the core of the band which peforms and records with the addition of a boy drummer/vocalist. Their distinctive style has earned them support slots with such touring acts Sonic Youth, Low, Blonde Redhead and prized influence, Cat Power.
The band's debut album brought them to the attention of Big Day Out organisers, who awarded principal songwriter Sarah Kelly the Jessica Michalik Music Endowment. Created in honour of a teenage girl who perished in a moshpit crush at the 2001 BDO, the endowment awards a “promising Australian songwriter” with a grant with which to further develop their craft. It was humbly put to that use by a band who formed as teenagers and who speak to a teenage audience.
The result is brand new album, The Shiralee. 'Shiralee' is an Aboriginal word meaning 'burden' and the album takes its title from a classic Australian novel of the same name.
Following on from their debut, the band's second album takes the melancholy dreaminess of their sonics and the innocent introspection of their lyrics and further distills it to create a more confident and more assured theredsunband. With its fast pace and sharp claws, The Eagle 7" epitomises this coming of age.
This release from The Passport label will introduce them to the UK in the hope that they will be embraced and adored on not-so-distant shores.
